Let’s Dive In – Canary (Versatile Bird)

I’m diving right in with my current project. I made a cute little hummingbird for a good friend. My husband’s boss caught a glimpse and has since requested a Canary. With a different color scheme, I came up with a cute little Canary.
Before you Start
- Yarn from Hobby Lobby: Baby Bee Adore-A-Ball, 100% Polyester, recommends a 9.0 mm hook. I couldn’t imagine using a hook that large. I’d recommend not.
- Using a 4.0 mm hook
- Abbrevations
- sc – single crochet
- st – stitch
- R – row/round
- mc – magic circle
- mr – magic ring (same thing)
- inc – increase (2 sc in same st)
- dec – decrease (combining 2 sts into one sc)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- cc – color change
- [ ] – indicates the # of scs in the round
Head and Body, Video 1 (Row 1-4)
- R1: mc of 6sc [6]
- R2: inc x 6 [12]
- R3-4 (two rounds): sc in every st around [12]
- CC on the 6th st if using a 3-color scheme
Video 2 (Row 5-6)
- R5: sc 6, *cc on 6th st* sc 6, *cc on the 6th st* [12]
- Insert eyes between R3 & R4. Insert the 1st eye into the 1st st of R3. Skip 5 sts, insert 2nd eye.
- R6: (sc, dec) x 2, *cc on the 2nd dec* (sc, dec) x 2 [8]
Video 3 (Row 7-11)
- R7: *cc on 1st st* (sc, inc) x 2, *cc on 2nd inc* (sc, inc) x 2 [12] *cc on 2nd inc before next round
- R8: (sc, inc) x 3, *cc on 3rd inc* (sc, inc) x 3 [18]
- R9-11 (3 rounds): sc 2, *cc on 2nd st* sc 7, *cc on 7th st* sc 9 [18]
Video 4 (Row 12-13)
- R12: sc 2, *cc on 2nd st* sc 1, dec 2, sc 2 *cc on that last st* sc 9 [16]
- R13: sc 2, *cc on 2nd st* sc 1, dec 2, *cc on 2nd dec* sc 9 [14]
Video 5 (Row 14-17) DONT FORGET TO STUFF!
- I forgot to stuff the bird in this video! Please make sure you do so before you close him up!
- R14: sc 2, *cc on 2nd st* sc, dec 1, *cc on dec* dec 1, sc 7 [12]
- Starting here, we are finished with color changes
- R15: sc 2, dec 2, sc 6 [10]
- R16: sc, dec 2, sc 5 [8]
- R17: dec 2, sc 4 [6]
- Cut, leave at least a 6 in tail, fasten off! (I’ll demonstrate this part in next video)
Video 6 (Finishing the birdy)
Cut, leaving a long tail, and fasten off
The Wings, Video 7 (Row 1-7)
A little information before we begin. In this next video, we learn how to rotate and turn rows when starting with a chain. As a general rule of thumb, most patterns instruct you to sc from the 2nd chain from the hook after you rotate.
R1: Chain 12. As you work around, start from the 2nd chain from the hook, sc in the next 11 sts, ch 1, and turn. (12)
The rest of the pattern instructs crocheting through the back loops only.
R2: sc 9, dec, ch 1, turn [11]
R3: dec, sc 8, ch 1, turn [10]
R4: sc 7, dec, ch 1, turn [9]
R5: dec, sc 6, ch 1, turn [8]
R6: sc 5, dec, ch 1, turn [7]
R7: dec, sc 4 [5]
Video 8 (Row 8-14)
R8: ch 6, rotate, 2nd ch from hook, sc 5, ch 1, turn [6]
R9: sc 4, inc, ch 1, turn [7]
R10: inc, sc 5, ch 1, turn [8]
R11: sc 6, inc, ch 1, turn [9]
R12: inc, sc 7, ch1, turn [10]
R13: sc 8, inc, ch 1, turn [11]
R14: inc, sc 9, ch 1 [11]
- Work across the top of the wings
- sc5tog: single crochet 5 together (almost like a 5 st dec)
- Do this twice across the top, ch 1*
- [Cut, long tail to sew and fasten off, in my next video]
Video 9 (Sewing Wings & Beak)
There’s no “right or wrong” way of doing this. Just follow basic knotting and color crossing to prevent unwanted finishing touches.
And that’s all! Thank you! Comment with feedback if you shall!
